Neurological Rehab in San Antonio

The diagnosis came with a great deal of information and almost nothing about how you are supposed to get up the front steps again. Neurological rehab rebuilds the everyday movement your nervous system stopped delivering.

01What It Is

What Is Neurological Rehab?

Neurological rehab is therapy for movement problems that begin in the nervous system rather than in the joint itself. A stroke, a traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis, a spinal cord injury, Parkinson's disease, cerebral palsy, peripheral neuropathy or a concussion can leave the muscle intact while the signal that drives it becomes unreliable. What you notice is a leg that drags, a hand that will not manage buttons, a walk that has turned slow and careful, or fatigue that arrives far earlier than it used to. The nervous system can relearn, and that relearning is the entire point of this work. Your therapist finds which specific tasks have broken down, then rebuilds them through practice that is frequent, precise and demanding enough to matter. Walking is trained by walking. Standing up is trained by standing up. Progress is measured in things you can do again, not in exercises completed.

This is care for any stage, not only for the weeks straight after a diagnosis or a hospital stay. People who have managed a condition for years still uncover range, strength and endurance they can recover, and people whose condition is progressive still gain from holding function longer and moving more safely. Your therapist coordinates with your physician and, where a brace, a cane or a walker would make you safer, will say so and teach you to use it properly. Sessions run 30 to 60 minutes, one on one, with the same therapist each visit so each progression builds on the last.

02Who It's For

Who it's for.

Neurological rehab suits anyone whose movement changed because of the nervous system, whether that happened overnight or slowly over years. What matters is the gap between what your body used to do and what it does now.

01

Recovering after a stroke or brain injury

One side is weaker, slower, or simply does not answer the way the other one does, and the hospital stay ended long before you felt ready. Your therapist works on the specific tasks that were taken away: standing up without pushing off, controlling the affected arm, walking without watching the floor, turning safely in a small kitchen. Repetition is the mechanism here, so sessions are demanding and tightly targeted. Progress is measured in what you can do without help.

02

Living with Parkinson's disease or MS

Your steps have shortened, turning has become an event, and the fatigue has started making decisions for you. Progressive conditions respond to training aimed squarely at how they present: larger amplitude of movement, longer steps, deliberate turning practice, and endurance work sized to the day rather than to the plan. Your therapist adjusts to how the condition behaves for you rather than to a textbook. The aim is keeping function and safety longer than doing nothing would allow.

03

Nerve pain, neuropathy or concussion symptoms

Numbness underfoot, burning down the back of the leg, or a head injury that left you dizzy and foggy weeks after everyone expected you to be fine. These are nervous system problems that feel like ordinary aches, so they often get treated as ordinary aches for far too long. Your therapist tests sensation, balance, coordination and tolerance to movement, then builds the program around what actually fails. The aim is walking, driving and working without symptoms setting the terms.

03What To Expect

What to expect in a session.

Sessions are practical. The work is built out of the tasks you need back, and it changes as your control and your tolerance improve.

01

An evaluation of function, not just strength

Your therapist watches you stand, walk, turn, reach and balance, then tests strength, sensation, coordination and endurance. Your history, your medications and the layout of your home all matter here, because the goal is set by your life rather than by a chart. You leave the first visit with a short list of clear functional goals and a plan for how each one gets rebuilt.

02

Repetition of the tasks you need back

The core of every session is high quality practice of specific movements: sit to stand, stepping over an obstacle, reaching across your body, walking on different surfaces, turning in tight spaces. Your therapist provides hands on guidance and support so the repetitions are done well rather than merely done, then withdraws that support as your control improves.

03

Safety at home and carryover between visits

Because the nervous system relearns through volume, what happens between appointments decides how far you get. Your therapist builds a home program that fits your energy and your space, sets up safe practice, and recommends equipment where it genuinely helps. Family or caregivers are welcome in the session so the technique is right at home too.

Good to know

Bring a list of your medications, any recent hospital or neurology notes, and the shoes and walking aid you actually use rather than a spare pair. If someone helps you day to day, bring them along. Wear clothing you can move, stand and practice in comfortably.
